Spin Out

Background

There’s finally a racing themed pinball machine at Tiltshift! Spin Out is the new oldest machine in the collection, being manufactured in July of 1975. This was several years before they started using microprocessors in pinball machines, so everything (scoring, rules, counting the number of balls, etc) is done with relays and stepper units.

Starting in the 1960s and continuing through the 70s, Gottlieb machines like this one had a very distinctive shaped backbox which tapered from the top down to a narrower base where it meets the cabinet, giving them the name “Wedgehead”. You can learn more about all the wedgehead machines at pinballrepair.com.

In this game you’re trying to collect the numbers 1 through 7 by hitting the corresponding targets. The catch is that only two numbers are available at any given time, displayed on a unique spinning target (or “rototarget”) in the center of the playfield.

It’s the oldest machine at Tiltshift, but the wedgehead shape and distinctive chimes make it a unique game you won’t find in most arcades.
